Oral diseases remain among the most common health problems affecting children worldwide. School-aged children are particularly susceptible to oral disorders because of changing dietary habits, increased sugar consumption, and inadequate oral hygiene practices. Healthy primary and permanent teeth are essential for proper chewing function, speech development, facial growth, and overall well-being. Preventive measures including regular dental examinations, fluoride application, oral hygiene education, and dietary counseling play a major role in maintaining oral health and reducing disease burden. Therefore, preventive dentistry has become an important component of pediatric dental care.
The aim of this study was to assess the role of preventive measures in maintaining oral health among school-aged children and evaluate their effectiveness in reducing oral diseases.
Materials and Methods
The study included 120 children aged between 6 and 14 years who underwent dental examination and oral health assessment. Clinical evaluation included assessment of oral hygiene status, prevalence of dental caries, dietary patterns, and preventive practices. Preventive interventions consisted of oral hygiene education programs, fluoride therapy, routine dental examinations, and nutritional recommendations. Follow-up assessments were performed to determine changes in oral health status.
The study demonstrated that children who regularly followed preventive oral care measures showed lower rates of dental caries and better oral hygiene status compared with children with inadequate preventive practices. Oral hygiene education significantly improved tooth brushing habits and awareness regarding oral health. Preventive interventions also contributed to reduced plaque accumulation and improved dental health outcomes.
Preventive dentistry represents an effective strategy for reducing oral disease prevalence in pediatric populations. Educational programs involving both children and parents improve awareness and encourage healthy behaviors. Regular preventive interventions allow early identification of risk factors and reduce the need for complex dental procedures.
Preventive measures play a critical role in maintaining oral health among school-aged children. Early implementation of preventive strategies significantly reduces oral disease occurrence and improves long-term dental outcomes. Comprehensive preventive dental programs should be encouraged to promote healthy oral habits in pediatric populations.
